Well the adventure begins! I am still not sure how this is going to pan out but we'll find out on August 15th on a sunday afternoon on the streets of Copenhagen. The decision to start this was made years ago as I always have wanted to see if I could actually do one of these Ironman events. Having watched endless Ironman events, including the ironwar between Mark Allen and Dave Scott in 1989 on TV I was always amazed how anyone could put themselves and their bodies through an ironman and live to tell the tale.
So just to give you some background. I have always done sports of varying nature, from cricket to triathlons, though I must admit the last triathlon I have done is nearly 6 years ago, so this may be jumping in at the deep end a bit, but that about sums up how I tend to do things, just ask my family. My real love though is cycling, what a great sport, I don't mean the professional circuit which has lost me as a follower anyway, but more the battle between you and your bike climbing the steepest mother of all hills. Yes you guessed it, I am not into flat timetrialling I love the feeling having attempted a bitch of an ascent on nice Irish roads, with the gale force winds hitting you in the face.
So now it is time to try and finish an Ironman, well truth be told to try and post a good time as well. Not sure what a good time is but lets say under 12-12.5hrs, I could regret stating that on the blog! Choosing the best race to enter seems to be key so that is why I have choosen Challenge Copenhagan (http://www.challengecopenhagen.com/) highly recommended for first timers. So the cash has passed hands so thats the decision made I suppose. However before even selecting the race the conversation with Suzanne (the wife of 11 years) had to happen. I must say she took it in her stride, well sort of. My eldest son just looked at me and still worries that Daddy is too old, thanks man. Don't worry James it will be fine!
So the training plan is in place, the Garmin watch is charged up and the new runners are purchased as well as the annual gym membership. Have a feeling I will be seeing alot of that place. So the plan I am attempting to follow is by Don Fink. He sets three 30 week training plans, beginners, intermediate and advanced, I have gone for the middle one as it involves not 20hrs a week in the peak part of the training plan. I can't commit to that amount. I think the strategy will be to do early morning and lunchtime training most of the time. I will be posting my weeks training here and letting you know how things go. Let the fun begin.
